Michelstadt is located in the Odenwald hills in southern Hesse, roughly halfway between Darmstadt and Heidelberg. Although it is one of Germany's best-preserved half-timbered towns, it attracts far fewer visitors than the region's more popular destinations.
The historic centre is compact and walkable, and its buildings and street patterns date back centuries rather than being reconstructions built for tourism.

The town hall in Michelstadt
The town has a population of around 15,000, making it the largest settlement in the Odenwaldkreis district. While it is ideal for a day trip from Frankfurt, there is still enough here to justify an overnight stay, particularly if you want to explore the surrounding Odenwald villages at a slower pace.
Michelstadt is located at an elevation of around 230 metres in the Inner Odenwald, a forested upland region in southern Hesse. The Odenwald extends from the Rhine plain to the west to the Main valley to the north and east.
Michelstadt borders directly on Erbach, the administrative centre of the Odenwald district. The two towns are so close together that they are often visited as a pair. However, a civic vote in 2007 rejected a proposal to merge the two towns.
Erbach is renowned for its ivory carving tradition and the collections at Erbach Castle, making both towns a worthwhile destination for a half-day or full-day trip.
Frankfurt Airport is the largest airport in Germany and offers extensive international connections. As the closest and most convenient airport for Michelstadt, it makes the most sense to use this option if arriving by air.
Distance to Frankfurt Airport: 60km
Distance to Stuttgart Airport: 130km
Distance to Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden Airport: 135km
Distance to Hahn Airport: 150km
Michelstadt has a railway station served by the Odenwaldbahn, a regional line connecting the Odenwald with Frankfurt, Darmstadt and Eberbach.
Heidelberg can be reached via a change in Eberbach.
The B45 and B47 roads cross in Michelstadt. These are historic trading routes linking cities such as Frankfurt, Würzburg, Worms and Augsburg.

The first written record of Michelstadt can be traced back to 741 with the donation of the settlement to Burchard, the first Bishop of Würzburg. The site was already a Frankish baronial estate with a castle that functioned as a refuge for the local inhabitants at that point. Following Burchard's death in 791, the area reverted to the Frankish Crown.
Louis the Pious, the son of Charlemagne, granted Einhard the freehold of the Michlinstat area in 815, in recognition of his service at court. Einhard was a close confidant of Charlemagne and the author of a famous biography of the emperor. He built the Einhardsbasilika in Steinbach and, in 819, bequeathed his holdings in the Odenwald to Lorsch Abbey.
Michelstadt was under the influence of the Counts of Erbach during the medieval period.
Michelstadt passed to the Grand Duchy of Hesse in 1806 as part of the county of Erbach. The completion of the railway line to Darmstadt in 1870, and then onwards to Eberbach in 1881, led to significant economic growth and transformed the farming and ironworking community into a town with textile and machine industries.
The Michelstadt Rathaus, built in 1484, is the building most closely associated with the town. It stands on the Marktplatz ('market square') and is a late Gothic half-timbered building. It is one of the most photographed timber-framed town halls in Germany and serves as a visual anchor for the entire old town. The square surrounding it features a fountain and is lined with additional historic buildings.

The Market Square in Michelstadt
The Kellereihof is a historic courtyard complex located next to Burg Michelstadt, the town's medieval fortress. Burg Michelstadt, which dates from around the 10th century, now houses a museum covering the town's history. The courtyard is used as a venue for the annual open-air theatre festival, Michelstädter Theatersommer, held each summer.
Parts of Michelstadt's medieval town walls still stand, as does the Diebsturm, a tower that was part of the original fortifications. Although the gate towers were demolished in the 19th century, what remains provides a clear indication of the town's former boundaries. Walking along the old walls takes visitors through some of the quieter parts of the old town, away from the main market square.
