The village of Mittenwald is located on the banks of the river Isar and between the impressive peaks of the Karwendel mountain range and the gentler hills of the Kranzberg.
The main road through to Austria (only a few kilometres to the south) runs past the village on a higher route to the east so Mittenwald is spared the summer holiday traffic trundling through the centre.
The main street and some of the side streets in the village centre have been pedestrianised and in summer the streets are busy with holidaymakers and daytrippers.
Mittenwald lies a little way to the south of the German Alpine Road on its way through Krün from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the Kochelsee and makes a nice break in the middle of tour for those who are doing the complete route and fancy recharging their batteries.
The hotels chosen are mainly from the four-star and three-star categories and some of them have online booking facilities through our travel fulfilment partner Booking.com. You can check availability at those particular hotels by clicking on the button under the hotel.
If you know when you are planning to go but haven't decided on accommodation, then use the search form underneath to get an idea of which hotels are available and to compare prices during the period you wish to travel.
(Please note that this selection will also include some pensions and self-catering apartments for those who are interested in that form of accommodation!)
Mittenwald is in the slightly unusual situation of having its closest and most convenient airport over a mountain range in another country.
Distance to Innsbruck Airport: 36km
Distance to Memmingen Airport: 152km
Distance to Munich Airport: 153km
Innsbruck Airport offers a good range of summer flights (and an even wider selection in the winter) while Munich is probably the best option for those needing a wide selection of scheduled flights. Although slightly closer than Munich, Allgäu Airport at Memmingen does not have the comparative ease of onward travel and connection frequency that the larger rival does.
The train station at Mittenwald is conveniently located just outside the pedestrian centre. A suburban Austrian service from the Tyrolean city of Innsbruck serves Mittenwald as the final stop while there are frequent trains run by the German regional rail system to Munich.
